The Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, MP, has directed the contractor working on the Maternity and Children’s block project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to resume work in two weeks.
The Hon. Minister gave the directive when he visited the hospital to evaluate the state of execution of the stalled project following the recent payments made to the contractor by the Ministry.
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Dr. Adam stated that the government had released an amount of 14 million euros to the contractor so that it could mobilise and resume work on the 500-bed maternity block.
“It is imperative that the contractor takes immediate steps to return to site upon the release of the 14 million euros to ensure the timely completion of the project” he stressed.
The Hon. Minister had earlier assured reporters that the government was determined to finish all the projects including markets, hospitals and other roads that had been initiated in the Ashanti Region.
He stated that he had been given clear orders by the President to secure funding to finish the Sofoline Interchange, the Kumasi International Airport and other road projects in the Ashanti Region.
He revealed that the contractor working on the Afari Military Hospital had also received Five Million Dollars and was certain that the project would soon be completed and put to use.
The Hon. Minister declared, “The people of Ashanti Region will have cause for celebration because all major projects that I have listed and others I did not mention will be tackled and completed for their use soon. The President of Ghana will make a big announcement to this effect in the coming days”.

Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, Chief Executive of KATH, briefed the Minister on the ongoing developments of the hospital, stating that its old blocks were being renovated as part of the Asantehene’s “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” (HeKAP).
He observed that the management was compelled to implement a gradual implementation strategy because of lack of space for the relocation of the patients. He mentioned that the finalisation of the 500-bed Maternity project would be greatly appreciated as it would provide additional room for patient relocation and renovation activities.
The CEO mentioned that as part of efforts at improving KATH, the hospital was pursuing the upgrading of its facilities and its equipment to meet the expectations of the large number of patients who seek its services from all over the country.
He, therefore, called for the support of the Ministry of Finance for the retooling of the hospital to enable it to improve its services to the public.
Prof. Addai-Mensah also called for the expedited replacement of health professionals who have exited the hospital for greener pastures abroad so that the standards of care and services to patients would not deteriorate.
